The Schengen visa, explained simply
South African passport holders require a Schengen visa to visit Croatia. Applications are processed through VFS Global – Croatia Visa Application Centre. You can apply up to 6 months prior to travel.
A Schengen visa is a single visa that covers Croatia, Germany and most of Europe. That matters for us twice over: once for Croatia itself, and again for our 7-hour layover in Munich - if you want to leave Munich Airport and see the city, you need a multiple-entry visa that is still valid on 17 July 2027. Ask for multiple entry when you apply.
How it works, step by step
Step 1
Now – December 2026
Sort out your passport
It must be valid for at least 3 months after 17 July 2027, have two blank pages, and be issued within the last 10 years. If yours is close to expiring, renew it before you apply - the visa gets stuck into the passport you apply with.
Step 2
From January 2027
Book your VFS appointment
You can apply up to 6 months before travel, which means January 2027 for a July trip. Complete the online application form, then book an appointment slot at the VFS Global Croatia Visa Application Centre. Slots for European summer go quickly - book the moment they open.
Step 3
Before your appointment
Gather every document
Use the checklist below. Missing paperwork is the number one reason applications get delayed or refused, and there is no negotiating on the day.
Step 4
Your appointment day
Attend in person
You go in person because they take your fingerprints and photo. Bring originals plus photocopies, pay the fees, and keep your receipt and reference number.
Step 5
Allow 15–45 days
Wait for the decision
Standard processing is around 15 calendar days but can stretch to 45 in peak season. Do not book anything non-refundable that you can't live without until your visa is in hand.
What to bring to your appointment
Always check the official VFS "what to bring" page before your appointment, because requirements change. As it stands, expect to need:
Application form
Completed and signed Schengen visa application form.
Passport
Original plus copies of every page that has a stamp or visa on it.
Photos
Two recent colour passport photos on a white background, meeting Schengen specs.
Flight bookings
Confirmed return flight reservation - Johannesburg to Dubrovnik out, Split to Johannesburg back.
Accommodation
Hotel confirmations for all 13 nights. I'll send everyone the booking confirmations to attach.
Travel insurance
Compulsory. Must cover the whole Schengen area for at least €30,000 in medical expenses and repatriation.
Bank statements
Your last 3 months of original stamped bank statements, showing you earn an income.
Proof of employment
A letter from your employer confirming your position, salary and approved leave dates. Self-employed: company registration and 6 months of business bank statements.
Payslips
Your last 3 payslips. If you're self-employed, provide 6 months of bank statements instead of a payslip.
Proof of address
A recent utility bill or municipal statement in your name.

One favour
Tell me the day you book your VFS appointment and the day your visa comes back. If one person's visa is running late we can still adjust, but only if we know about it early.
